Open Water, the folk band hailing from coastal Kent’s Deal, released its latest album ‘Above The Waterline’ on 25th March, 2023.
A combination of inspirational lyricism and calming acoustic folk-pop, this 11-track project is sure to be a hit among fans of Crosby Stills and Nash, Magna Carter and Transatlantic Sessions.
The album is driven by the warmth and generosity of lead vocalist Joanne Doolan and the skill of guitarists Jeff Alexander, Richard Doolan. This particular collaboration began 27 years ago when Jeff taught Richard to play the guitar – a relationship that has only gotten stronger over time, as Richard and Joanne share a life together as partners and parents.
Lead single ‘Summer Cries’ is indicative of the album’s sound and will provide listeners with a taste of what lies ahead: calm, layered guitar melodies provide a comforting bed on which Joanne’s delicate vocal delivery is layered. The accompanying music videos take viewers on a journey through the Kentish woodland, demonstrating the beauty of the band’s music as well as that of the natural spaces around Deal. But, Open Waters’ journey toward creating a second album was more complex than one might imagine.
Upon being diagnosed with two cysts on her vocal chords in 2017, Joanne faced an uncertain future, undergoing a surgery with no certain guarantee of success. Fortunately, through a combination of luck and the skillful work of a surgeon and professional rehabilitation team, not only was security for members of the band restored, but miraculously, it saw Joanne’s voice reaching even greater heights.
Her staggering vocal range resulted in a voice teacher offering her a job, thus allowing the gift of music to reach even further. The album was created during a very tough time in 2020, with each song crafted to inspire all who listen with a sense of hope, optimism and spirit. The title ‘Above The Waterline’ acts as an apt metaphor for the band’s own experiences, ready to move beyond the waves of uncertainty. Open Water have truly encapsulated the very essence of their creative process, their environment and their relationships through this classic folk-pop album.
