Hailing from New Hampshire, Roger Rudenstein is quickly becoming a well-known and respected name in the world of modern opera. His work over the years, particularly his witty, satirical operas The Devil and George Bush and The Rise & Fall of Donald P. Glumph has garnered him rave reviews from the likes of The New York Times, and over 100,000 streams on Soundcloud. If two full length operas about recent history’s two most entertaining nit wits wasn’t enough though, he’s also written, symphonies, concertos, chamber pieces and 29 full length piano sonatas! The word prolific comes to mind, and it’s quite clear that Roger has a truly musical mind and real gift for what he does.
His latest work however has gone in a more serious direction, with his operatic take on James Joyce’s 732 page epic Ulysses. Choosing to use the works original text however, Roger has composed the music to fit around what are called leitmotifs, reflecting the rhythm and cadence of the characters speech and internal monologues, telling the story in a very immersive and natural way.
Europe is the next on the list though and Roger is looking to perform his new opera over here as this is where the essence of Rogers work lies and where there is still a great love for Joyces work.
